I have found out that the greatest asset any person can have before going into a relationship is the Word of God. Some people may view this as being "too spiritual" but believe me, there is nothing more important that God's opinion about the relationship.
You ask why?
- THE SHAKING
Everything experiences a shaking at one point or the other. Companies, nations, individuals and relationships all experiences shaking. When your relationship is shaking, will it stand or fall? The story was told of two men who wanted to build a house, one built his house on the sand, the other choose to build it on the rock. Not long after, there was a storm, the house that was built on the sand fell, the one that was built on the rock stood. The problem wasn't the house, it was the foundation. If you go ahead into a relationship outside God's approval, it's like building on the sand, the storm will come, it always does...and then, a heart breaks. It wouldn't be the guy or the lady that is faulty, it would be the foundation. God's Word is forever, it doesn't matter the challenge, it will stand. If you make God's Word the foundation of your relationship, It will stand.
- THE SEED PRINCIPLE
It is true that things don't appear the way they are. If you take a seed in your hand, it is a seed really, but it is more that a seed, it has potentials. As a matter of fact, you are holding a tree in your hand. It is the same with people, we are always evolving. The guy or lady you are looking at is like a seed, you can't really tell all that's in them. Dr. Munroe said "When in doubt about an equipment, the best person to as is the manufacturer". God is the manufacturer of man. He knows the potentials in the guy or lady you are thinking of dating or marrying. If you allow Him to guide your decisions, you will eventually marry the man or woman of your dream. 
Like the seed, he or she may not look like it but with time, you will see the real man or woman evolve. I trust that you will allow God to guide your marriage decisions.
